Dining Chairs

Now that I've got this awesome  Herman Miller breakfast table, it looks like I'll need to pick up a couple chairs to go along with it.

Naturally, I'd prefer something vintage, but with the price of mid-century dining chairs climbing into the stratosphere, replicas may be the most feasable option.

So I've had a look on Amazon and selected a few sets that might work:

Any thoughts?  Anyone out there ever own a replica?  I'd love to hear your experiences and opinions.

Edit: Does anyone know if you can paint the chromed wire chairs?  I might be tempted to do them in black.

  1. I think the replica Bertoia chairs would look great and would avoid a stark look of too much white. You could also change the seat cover colors down the road to match any decor color change.

    1. I'm leaning that way right now. The diamond chairs are probably my favorite, but I don't know if they might be a bit too wide. Might have to go with the plain wire chairs.

  2. I'm no expert, but it seems that paint would chip off pretty easily, unless you had them professionally powedercoated. I actually like the idea of the chrome chairs with the table, and like Rachael said, you could have endless variety in pads.

    1. Hmmm, I'm no expert either, but powercoating sounds expensive. I'll look into and see. Perhaps I'll be pleasantly surprised. The originals were covered in a resin/plastic, weren't they? This might be a job for Plasti-Dip!

  3. I have a client that has the replica side shells with the dowel legs and they look great. They are however plastic shells that are pretty light in weight, they don't use them as everyday dining, but they have held up so far.what about using something that is less expected. maybe a vintage set of Goodform aluminum chairs, they seem easier to come by, cheaper than Eames, but still have withstood the test of time?

    1. Thanks Hannah! Yeah, unfortunately almost nothing is made out of fiberglass any more. It looks/holds up a million times better than plastic, but I guess consumers wanted cheap and that's what they got.

Good to hear that the dowel chairs hold up well. Never really know with replicas so it's helpful to hear from someone with first-hand experience.

  4. I looked for soooo long for a set of 6 (armless) chairs for my dining table. Well over a year. I finally gave up and bought a set of Room and Board Jake chairs. I've been really happy with them. I like the looks of those dowel leg chairs you've picked out, but I gotta say I'm not a big fan of the plastic shells in person.

    1. The Jakes look pretty nice as well. Do they scratch though? I looked at replica Eames bent plywood chairs too, but was worried that the unprotected veneer would get torn up by pocket rivets, keys, and the like.

  5. the Eames plastic chairs I love them all, whether with an Eiffel base, maple or even the rocking one. My boyfriend thinks I'm mad but I've slowly convinced him that we should buy one at a time until we have a decent set for our dining table. chaise eames france
