Is it spring yet?

Did you all enjoy that nail-biting Superbowl 2013?  I must admit, the whole sports thing is beyond me, but I'll take any excuse I can get to grill up a few burgers and brats.  I probably spent more time out tending the BBQ than actually watching the game.

I even got to give the new Woodard patio set a pre-spring test run.

Yep, the very same Woodard that turned out the iconic Sculptra and Orange Slice lines.  This is one of their more staid designs, but it was produced with the same eye on quality.  With thick iron frames and solid welds, these sets were made to last.

What attracted me to this particular model was the lack of frilly and flowery ornamentation, which appeared on may of the later Woodard products.

I've only ever seen these Woodard patio chairs and tables in black, but this magazine spread suggests that they came in other colors as well.  Perhaps a new paint job is in order?  That might hold me over until I can get my hands on one of those dreamy Salterinis.

We'll I better get back to those leftovers... and a good helping of Pepto Bismol.

  1. Nice patio set; I've been looking for a similar set. Black and white were probably the most common colors but you can paint them any color you desire.

  2. My mom has the exact patio set. IBM gave them away. We painted it black, but it needs repainting. Any ideas on the best way to spray paint it? I know it takes a zillion cans of paint.

    1. Here's a decent how-to guide:

I'd reccomend Krylon or Rustoleum as well. I've used them on all of my metal painting projects and can't complain.

  3. Your new set looks sturdy and very well made. Are you going with traditional black/white or something a little more wow. How about bright pumpkin orange, even though not authentic probably.

    1. I think that I might go with something with a bit more pop. A teal, maybe?

    2. Teal is a good idea. I kind of love that color. Not green, not blue.

  4. You have a great Woodard set. Mine looks very similar. I think I'm going to get it powdercoated. By the time I spend money every spring on a bazillion cans of paint, it probably will save money in the long run.

    1. It most likely will save in the long-run, but I'm still holding out for my Salterini, which I'll baby and take in for a full powder coating. A guy can dream, can't he?

  5. Ahhhh memories! My family had the exact same set! I wonder whatever happened to them? I'm thinking garage sale. :( Oh well. Nice score and I think a bright teal would be amazing!

    1. They were pretty popular back in the day. My parents have another two sets of their own as did both of my grandparents. From what I understand, Woodard was the "premier" patio furniture manufacturer back in the 60's and 70's before we started importing all of that Chinese aluminum and steel junk.

  6. Read your first reply to Jay, Teal would be nice but along the same line how about SEAFOAM GREEN. Doesn't Seafoam Green just sound a little more retro/vintage/mid century when you say it out loud.

    1. Yep, that's exactly what I had in mind. Seafoam green would probably be a better description of what I was looking for rather than teal. Thanks Dave! I think it'd go great with the red fence.

    2. Reading further along... Seafoam green sounds just as nice!

  7. I definitely had fun over superbowl weekend! I think I had that same or a very similar outdoor table at the home I grew up in!
