Dusting off the green thumb

Anyone want some fresh-grown tomatoes?

We'll be having tomatoes-aplenty at the nickarmadillo homestead in the coming months.  There's a whole 24 plants sprouting out of those plastic containers!  Good thing I love tomatoes, right?

Oh, wait....

I LOATHE tomatoes with every fiber of my being!

You might ask yourself, "What would motivate a man who despises tomatoes so deeply to plant this many of them?"

Well, my girlfriend is a huge fan.  However, she's snuck off to England and left me on caretaker duty for these vile vegetables (or fruits, depending on who's asked).

I hope and pray that they will either wait to ripen up until her return or my lovely friends and neighbors can take a few home when they're ready.  Otherwise we might have a big pulpy mess on our hands.

What I am looking forward to are the carrots, strawberries, zucchini, parsley, and peas.  There's nothing better than sliced and barbecued zucchini with olive oil, ground pepper, and a sprinkle of salt.  I'll use any excuse I can to get the grill out!

Rabbits take notice: We're on to you.  We know what you did to our poor evergreen saplings and have beefed up security around this joint.  Just try getting through these Clampett-inspired fences!

  1. Hah, Don't be so dramatic! You'll forget all about it when i've knocked up and canned a years supply of awesome pasta sauce.

Also, "There's nothing better than sliced and barbecued zucchini with olive oil, ground pepper, and a sprinkle of salt." ... Ribs? ...

FTR - The parsley you speak of is actually cilantro...

    Cilantro lime rice... http://www.budgetsavvydiva.com/2012/01/copycat-recipe-chipotles-cilantro-lime-rice/

    2. School breaks up 20th July. I left estimate harvest dates for everything in the fruit bowl by the fridge. All thats left for you to do is water them... Oh and divide 24 tomato plants into separate pots ; )

    2. Dana - All of my tomatoes for that Bertoia Diamond Chair and Ottoman in the shop? Sound like a fair trade? :P

Mr Mod - I'm sure we'll have a few extra for you when/if they come. Just never mention the words "tomato salad" again. Yuck!

  3. Your garden looks great! I started mine but besides the tomatoes, pepper, and cucumbers I starting indoors it's moving a little slow... Be thankful you don't have deer to deal with along with the rabbits!

    1. Thanks Allie. Are you doing them in a sunroom and then transferring outside later on?

Those wild critters can be quite pesky. They can have their fill of the tomatoes. Just leave me my poor zucchini!

    2. I started them in containers on the bathroom windowsill 2 months ago (the only room I can shut out my plant-munching cats) and now that the ground is warm I am moving them to the garden. We haven't planted any zucchini but after reading your "recipe" I think I might!
