The Nook

With the upstairs almost complete and a whole house repaint indefinitely postponed, my attention has turned to one particular trouble spot in the living room.

This nook drives me nuts!   It was, at one time, used to house the tubular chimes for the doorbell, which the renovators removed along with the vintage original bathroom and kitchen (These ill-conceived projects were not my doing.  I bought the place post-renovation.).  Since moving in, I've been on a fruitless search for the perfect vertically-oriented painting or sculpture that would really set this feature off, but NOTHING seems to fit.

So, instead it sits half-filled with this sad little display.  I like the sculpture in and of itself, but the scale is totally off and Lady Justice is missing half of her balance.  Is this a purposeful critique of our justice system?  No, it's just poor decorating.

Well, the search goes on, but the upstairs bedroom is coming along.  I still haven't pulled the trigger on a TV for the theater area and, like the rest of the house, it needs a fresh coat of paint, but I'm fairly satisfied with how it looks right now.

Baby steps.

  1. Nice lookin' place. Let me say it before someone else does. Why not put a new set of doorbell chimes in that nook. A good Westminster chime will give you 4 nice long bells to fill that space.

  3. Your upstairs is looking fantastic. I really like what you've done with the space. The color scheme is great, and you have some really good looking pieces of furniture there. It almost looks self-contained. I'll say it again...You have excellent taste.

  5. Nice! Love the upstairs. Have you thought about trying to find some replacement vintage door chimes for the nook?

  7. You should try to make a piece of art yourself that would fit in the nook. A simple mobile style piece to hang from the top of the arch and hang down, that way it won't look so half empty.
Also, you need to give me a lounge chair, you clearly have too many ;)

  8. Thanks guys. Sorry I've been away for a few days. Real life has interceded and made getting to the blog somewhat difficult.
