Mea Culpa

Hey strangers.  It's been far too long since our last update.

Yeah, I've been a bad blogger as of late.  No/short posts and a Negative Nancy (or, in this case, Nick) attitude make for a crappy read, and I apologize.  Mea culpa.

I'm trying to be a bit more positive and get back into the swing of things.  The first step: mid-mod retail therapy.

Though the thrifts didn't yield any treasures, making my normal rounds brightened my spirits.  Getting back to your regular routine is kinda comforting when everything else in your life is rapidly changing.  My weekend trip to Vandeventer Vintage was also much more fruitful.

I got me a Milo Baughman recliner....

... or at least I think it's a Baughman recliner.  There's no tags, but the look is very similar to the others I've come across.

The only discernible difference is that most of the Baughmans I've seen had much thicker cushions and solid, nubby upholstery.  However, I do believe that this piece was recovered and the padding removed at some point.  No biggie.  The herringbone pattern, which looks much darker in person, goes well with the sofa and the color scheme I'm trying to develop in the living room.

Alex at Vandeventer Vintage was running a sale of sorts.  He mentioned something about an auction buyer backing out  (a big no-no) and having to clear out the extra inventory, so I was pleasantly surprised by the pricing.  He had a great collection of stuff there, though I assume that it moved out of there real quick-like.  I only wish that I'd been able to snag a couple of the upholstered Eames shells he had available, but the lounge immediately caught my eye and another buyer swooped in while I was distracted.  Oh well, I'm pretty happy with my purchase.

I even get to rearrange my living room again!  Yes, I get some sort of strange satisfaction out of moving furniture around.  I'm weird like that.

  1. Love the chair. The upholstery is very masculine, yet very pleasing to females who don't like a lot of fussy, girly-girl stuff. I bet it looks fantastic in your living room. Hope you show us a rearrange shot.

    1. Hah! The girlfriend actually loves the girly stuff. Good thing I have the run of the house when she isn't here, so I get to do all the decorating.

  2. Hi Nick.

I think I saw that chair in the ad for one of the estate sales about a week or two ago. It was like the ONLY thing worth going to the sale for...so I didn't go. Yeah, I could see in the online pics that there was something different about the seat cushions. Does it still have the recliner mechanism? It's hard to tell from the photos. Sounds like you probably got it for about what it sold for at the estate sale!

    1. Yep. Looks like the cushions are missing. Foam probably went bad and got chucked when the chair was recovered. It's kinda uncomfy, but still a great looking piece at a really good price.

  4. I too would love to see this baby in action. And some back shots please! Haven't done any research, but it's a great looking chair...

    1. I'll try to get some better ones up soon. Had to do some gymnastics to get these photos with my Nexus (only has a front camera), so I couldn't really see what I was shooting. Guess it's time to dust off the real camera again.

  5. If my two years of Latin in high school still serve, I'd say that's good advice. In the current vernacular, hang tough. What doesn't kill you makes you stronger. The road to heaven isn't easy.

  6. I should probably confess that my high school Latin teacher (my favorite teacher of all time and my role model when I later became a teacher) once caught me with a translation pencilled into my textbook...copied from a friend, since I hadn't done my homework. She was so upset that she told me my character was deteriorating before her very eyes (and cited a certain boy I was dating as a bad influence), a comment that showed up in my yearbook several times, as you can imagine. Properly chastised, I shaped up, and she forgave me. Sadly, however, my unscholarly and very loose translation may be the result of my cheating ways, though the 46 years that have passed since then don't help either. ;)

  7. Hey, Nick. Love the way we females have commandeered your blog for our own personal conversation? ;)
