Rocket Century

Wanna see some of the cool stuff that Mr. Modtomic and I left behind at the Rocket Century sale?  Head on over to his page and check it out!

Seeing that Jens Risom sofa still makes me want to jump in the van and take another trip.  Anyone know an upholsterer who does charity work?   They'd be well compensated in the form of good karma and my eternal admiration ;)

  1. If you find a pro bono upholsterer who is willing to travel, let me know...LOL I'll sell my new equipment and won't worry about learning how to do it myself.

    1. Oh, surely someone out there has a kind heart, deft hands, and hours and hours of tireless labor that they'd be willing to contribute in order to bring me my dream sofa...

  2. Yes, Agreed! Makes me wish that I paid more attention in the sewing class I took in middle school! I still look at pieces like this sofa and wish I could at least do some cool slip covers! A fun mod print could make this sofa so awesome, but if you're a purist, and are looking for real vintage new upholstery fabric, we actually have some in stock. This sofa was slated to be reupholstered, but we had already reupholstered too many other pieces at the time. For St. Louisians who are thinking about taking this project on, we do know of some good and reasonable upholsterers, but there is no such thing as cheap when you have to pay someone to do it. My guess on labor alone is approximately $700-800. Done right though, it would be worth it. After all, how many pieces of cr#@! sofas sell for new at that price, and they are just junk that will end up in a landfill 3-4 years from now? This sofa recovered in the right upholstery could last ANOTHER half a century! OR you could buy 12 more over priced junk sofas over the next half a century that you'll end up hating in the long run. I know, I'm a bit of a geek when it comes to thinking about the overall cost savings, and environmentally smart reasons for buying good vintage, but I can't help myself. :) LOL

    1. Yeah, it'll be a big job, but it would definitely be worth it. I'd like to see something nice and nubby on it, perhaps in a moss green, grey, or mustard yellow. Retro sofas like this are hard to come by.
